Women’s leadership in African sport remains significantly underrepresented. Despite their talent, skills, and ambition, many women continue to face cultural, institutional, and economic barriers that limit their access to leadership and decisionmaking roles.
From 7 to 9 December 2025 in Dakar, the International Conference on Women and Sport in Africa (CIFSA), organized by CONFEJES, will bring together: political and institutional decision-makers, elite athletes, experts and researchers, and advocates for gender equality.
Together, we will exchange insights, share concrete solutions, and build a path toward fair representation of women in sport, on the field and in leadership positions.

Welcome to the first edition of the International Conference on Women and Sport in Africa (CIFSA), organized in Dakar by CONFEJES in partnership with WSAN (Women Sport Africa Network) from December 7 to 9, 2025. For the first time, this event will be held in French-speaking Africa, under the High Patronage of His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye FAYE, President of the Republic of Senegal - a great source of pride!
Under the theme Sport and women's leadership "This conference aims to advance the role of women in all areas of sport in Africa, by bringing together decision-makers, experts, athletes and committed partners.
Your participation testifies to the importance we attach, together, to inclusive and equitable sport. Because sport cannot fully play its role of emancipation without women, at all levels of decision-making and practice.
This conference will highlight inspiring career paths and promising initiatives, as well as the challenges we still have to overcome. I am particularly delighted to welcome the historic election of the first woman president of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry - a major step forward and a beacon of hope for all African women.

This session will highlight how sport serves as a powerful tool for the empowerment and autonomy of African women, including those with disabilities. Female athletes andleaders will share personal stories of how sport has transformed their lives, both professionally and personally.
Weencourage federations, clubs, researchers, athletes, coaches, NGOs and governments to gather, share and promote data and lived experiences of African women in sport.
This session will examine persistent barriers to women’s access to leadership roles in African sport. It will address human rights and protection of girls and women in sport, analyze current data on female representation, and explore the institutional, cultural, and economic factors limiting progress.
Address the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles within sports federations, clubs, and ministries, with the goal of reaching at least 40% female representation by 2030.
Through an interactive workshop, this session will showcase successful policies and practices promoting the inclusion of women in sport. Panelists will explore emerging issues such as climate action, sustainability, and governance, while highlighting scalable initiatives across the continent.
Engage both male and female leaders in sport to become active advocates after the conference, ensuring long-term visibility and support for inclusive approaches.
This session will offer a platform for dialogue between established female leaders and young women aspiring to leadership in sport. It will explore mentorship models and career development strategies tailored to the African sports context.
Build sustainable spaces for mentorship and connection, and ensure that women leaders are present and accessible at all levels of sport to support the next generation.
This session will focus on gender-based disparities in competitive sports, including participation gaps, infrastructure access, pay inequalities, and recognition of female athletes’ performance and careers. Experts and witnesses will propose reforms and strategies to promote fairness in elite sports.
Advance equal pay in all sporting competitions. We call on governing bodies, sportsfederations, sponsors, and media outlets to invest equally in women’s sports and talents.
